Dear Friends,

The High Holy Day season is here once again. The last year has been a whirlwind of relationships, celebrations, learning, praying, grieving, growing, and moving. I look forward to continuing to build relationships with each and every one of you.

We will be returning to The First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica at 1008 11th Street (corner of 11th Street and Washington Avenue) for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services. Sukkot and Simchat Torah services will be at The Santa Monica Synagogue at 1260 18th Street.

Shana tova u’m’tukah! (May you have a good and sweet New Year!)

Rabbi Shira Freidlin

TICKETS

Once we’ve received your membership renewal, complimentary tickets will be provided for you and your immediate family members (4th grade and up, living at home with you). Tickets may be picked up at the synagogue office and will be available at the will call table at the church for each service.

If you wish to have your adult children (not living at home with you) or other relatives attend our service, tickets are $100 per person. Please contact the Treasurer (treasurer@thesms.org) if there are special circumstances that necessitate an adjustment in ticket price. If you wish to have friends join our services, guest tickets are $200 each.

Please make sure your membership renewal and your requests for extra tickets are received by September 19th. For security reasons, each person must present a ticket for each service.

Note that all services will also be streamed live on Zoom and Facebook.
Visit thesms.org website for streaming information.

PARKING
Underground parking is available in the Senior Housing building directly across 11th street from the church. During the day, please do not park on the first level of the underground parking lot. While we
realize that the parking spaces in the underground structure are narrow, as a courtesy to other congregants, please park within the lines so you don’t take up two spaces. If you park on the street, please be aware of 2-hour permit parking zones, particularly on California Ave., as well as street cleaning restricted parking.

TASHLICH
Our Tashlich service will be held near Lifeguard Station 26 on the beach in Santa Monica near the corner of Ocean Park Boulevard and Barnard Way on Thursday, October 3 rd at 4:00 pm. Please remember to bring $15 for parking—exact change is appreciated. Parking lot entrance is on Barnard Way, one-half block south of Ocean Park Blvd.

PRAYER BOOKS
We will be using the Mishkan HaNefesh prayer books. Please bring your own copy of the prayer book if you have it. If you do not, prayer books will be provided at the church for members and guests. For those attending virtually, books may be picked up from the synagogue during office hours. Kindle e- reader copies are also available below.
here.

CHAI CONTRIBUTION
Each household is asked to contribute at least Chai ($18) toward the costs of the High Holy Days.

HIDUR MITZVAH CONTRIBUTIONS
The Jewish custom of Hidur Mitzvah (embellishment) helps to beautify and enrich our High Holy Day services. You may make donations at below as part of the High Holy Day Registration, or by using the Hidur Mitzvah Donation form in this package and returning it to the Office by September
19th.

YIZKOR BOOK
Yizkor is a time when we bring to mind all of our loved ones and friends who have died. Names submitted in previous years will be included automatically. If you wish to have an additional name(s) listed in our Yizkor book that you did not submit previously, you may fill out that information below in the High Holy Day Registration or use the printed form below. Please note there is a separate section in the book for those who have died during the past year.
Be sure to print the names clearly. All names must be submitted by September 19th.

CHILDREN’S PARTICIPATION
To help school age children begin to experience some of the majesty of the High Holy Days, and to familiarize them with High Holy Day songs and melodies (e.g. Kol Nidre, Aveinu Malkeinu), you may bring them to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. However, there will be no childcare available. We invite families to join us on Rosh Hashanah afternoon at the beach near Lifeguard Station 26 for our outdoor ceremony of Tashlich.
If you have any questions, please call the office at 310-453-4276
Or email us at office@thesms.org
